Apply today to join a garden program for the 2019 garden season. Gardeners in our programs receive a garden bed, free seeds and seedlings, mentor support throughout the season, and a compost top-off after every season.  Explore the possibilities below and fill in an application for the program that best suits your needs!

Apply for a raised bed in a local community garden

Backyard Growers manages 10 different community gardens around the city of Gloucester, everywhere from public parks to low-income and senior-development housing. Gardeners and families are given their own raised garden bed, garden trainings, free seeds and seedlings, and a compost top-off at the end of the season.

  • You are a Pond View, McPherson Park, Willowood Gardens, or Riverdale Park resident OR

  • You live in Gloucester and are interested in a garden at Burnham's Field Community Garden

Apply for a backyard garden

Backyard Growers builds a raised garden bed for low- to moderate-income Gloucester residents in their backyard. Gardeners have access to garden trainings and mentors, free seeds and seedlings, cooking workshops and a free compost top-off at the end of their first two seasons.

Download our application and scan/email/return a hard copy; OR contact our community programs director at community@backyardgrowers.org. You are eligible for a 4’ x 8’ x 2’ raised backyard garden bed if:

  • Low- to moderate-income Gloucester residents (see HUD income guidelines on application).

  • In 2019, we will be giving preference to households with members ages 62+.

  • Garden area must have at least 6 hours of full sun and easy access to water.

  • If a renter, must have permission from landlord to participate in the program (we do not remove gardens once placed).

  • Commit to attending the mandatory garden training and cooking workshops, paying the sliding-scale participation fee, completing a participant survey, and participating in the program for two years.

  • Beginner and experienced gardeners are welcome to apply.

  • We also accept people into the program who already have a garden, but want to take advantage of the training, resources, and garden mentor.

Give a Garden, Get a Garden

When you participate Backyard Growers' Give-a-Garden, Get-a-Garden program, not only do you get a garden, but you make it possible for a low-income Gloucester family or senior to have a garden just like yours! Download our application.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION

Your contribution pays for an 8’x4’x2’ bed (see picture below) at your home or business and also provides a garden to a local family in need. 

YOUR GARDEN

You pick the spot. We build the garden, and show you how to make it flourish. Available North Shore wide! With your new garden you'll also receive a 2 hour Square Foot Garden training and garden resources. Plus, $500 of your generous donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
